With Kiss Daniel’s proposed 1st of May album launch date inching closer, the singer is putting finishing touches to the collective.

Mama the latest single from the G-Worldwide singer is expected to be the last single until the release of the album. But while Kiss Daniel puts in a lot of effort to pull off another major afro pop hit with his smoky voice, we can’t help but feel Kiss Daniel tasked the wrong person with the job of smithing the new number.

Produced by YBNL’s producer-in-crime, Young John, Mama opens with alternate chords of the same organ synths we heard on Olamide’s 2015 smash hit Bobo.

The synths play through Kiss Daniel’s introduction while soft kicks, bass guitars, and background vocals slowly ease into the instrumentation. Though the similarities with Olamide’s Bobo are nearly unmistakable, Young John tweaks around the former with a mix of both electronic guitars, filter cut-offs and dubstep drops.

Somehow all of these should work smoothly for any afro pop song, but here, warped around Kiss Daniel’s 2Baba-esque style, neither the instrumentals nor Kiss Daniel’s voice are able to find a comfortable chemistry. This is often evidenced by occasional interjections by a voice going ‘ah’ between vocal stops in the background.

A wholesome listen to gleans the poor mixing and sound editing, essentially leaving Mama a sonically incoherent listen. Which is disappointing considering Kiss Daniel tried to show off a more lyrical side with near-poetic narratives. We have seen definitely seen Young John hit more creative peaks with Lil Kesh and Olamide.

Luckily, these flaws are not enough to overshadow Kiss Daniel on Mama. The compulsion to rhyme occasionally coes in place of better-worded lyrics, like when Kiss Daniel slinks into the second verse singing If I am to shoot, girl I’ll shoot for you/ain’t gon’ kill baby just a bullet wound. You’re drawn into a nostalgic pre-Unstoppable 2face, whose Grace to Grace album houses some of the better-written songs out of Nigeria till date.

Kiss Daniel clearly understands the importance of evolving as an artiste and is currently working along that line. But between releasing unnecessary remixes and leaving the deft hands of DJ Coublon to work with up and coming producers, he seems to be constantly running into brick walls led by poor decision making.

Mama plays like it could be a great song, the average listener is in fact almost tempted to give a couple replays to see if anything will change. But it doesn’t. It never does.
